After the Law on the Protection of Personal Data No. 6698 was adopted by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye on 24 March 2016, it was published in the Official Gazette dated 7 April 2016, No. 29677.

The Personal Data Protection Authority is a public institution with public legal personality and administrative autonomy, associated with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Türkiye, in accordance with Article 19 of Law No. 6698.

Duties of the Authority

To follow practices and legislative developments within its field of duty, to make evaluations and recommendations, and to carry out or commission research and studies.
To cooperate, where necessary, with public institutions and organizations, non-governmental organizations, professional bodies or universities on matters within its remit.
To monitor and evaluate international developments regarding personal data, cooperate with international organizations and attend meetings on matters within its remit.
To present its annual activity report to the Presidency and to the Human Rights Inquiry Committee of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye.
To fulfil other duties assigned by law.
